University of Saskatchewan Horticulture Club Projects
Our Field Project
Every summer, the Horticulture Club is granted a portion of field space at the University of Saskatchewans Horticulture Field Lab for growing a garden. Club members assist in planning the variety of vegetables to grow and the club Field Managers do their best to create the garden with two seeding dates initiated to provide different harvest times. Members have a chance to obtain hand on experience as they participate in seeding, pruning and harvesting. This is a great opportunity to work and care for different types of plants and benefit with take home produce.

Our Greenhouse Project
A Hands on Learning Environment
Each year, the horticulture club is allowed to use a portion of the Agriculture Research Greenhouse as a space for a variety of projects. The greenhouse is a beautiful facility that is heated and lighted all year round. Club members come up with ideas as to what kinds of projects to do in the greenhouse, and the club greenhouse managers do their best to organize and undertake these projects. For example, we usually have fresh vegetables growing in the greenhouse all winter long, with different plants being planted and harvested at different times. Members participate in all aspects of growing the plants: from seeding, to pruning to harvest. Members get the chance to have some hands on experience with growing different kinds and plants, and they get to take home plants and produce. Other projects in the greenhouse may include: exotic plants, cacti and succulents, edible flowers, grafting and propagation (we are always open to new ideas). As we move forward with the privilege of managing greenhouse space, we need to be mindful of how to best use our space. There is an aspect of greenhouse growing that involves the building and maintenance of the equipment that grows our plants (most importantly our irrigation equipment). Next year, there will be a couple of sessions involving the setup and maintenance of drip irrigation and fertilizer rates. This will give a chance for members to learn more about how greenhouses are run and how plants require special attention when grown in soilless media. It will also help to lighten the workload of the managers.

Processing Project
The taste of Learning
Processing sessions continue through the year and are performed at the University of Saskatchewan. Members are given the opportunity to learn how to preserve food with hand on experience. Club managers look for various recipes to try and provide additional ideas of how to utilize left-over garden vegetables. Preserves such as apple jelly, pesto, squash soup, salsa, pizza and apple sauce are a few of past projects.

Bee Project
The Bee Project sessions operate through the summer months at the Horticulture Club. Currently two hives have been created, presenting a great opportunity for members to learn the step by step process to operate a Honey Bee Hive. Managers are available to answer any questions throughout the process.
